South Sumatra is one of 34 provinces which is in southern, Sumatra,Indonesia. It's bounded to the north by the province of Jambi, to the east by the Bangka Strait, across which lies the island province of Bangka Belitung, to the southeast by the Java Sea, and to the west by the province of Bengkulu. The provincial capital and the largest city are in Palembang which has area 35,364 square miles (91,592 square km), and also the population in Palembang had already reached 7.450.394 approximately in 2010.
Just for your information a few months ago specifically on April 2016 I went to Palembang to attended my cousin's wedding party, it was the first time when I put my feet on the Sumatra Island. Unfortunately, my trip didn't even work properly because of I had to through many obstacles in front of me, what kind of obstacles was it?! if all of you would like to know what happened to my self and how suffered I was. I can share my experienced to all of you, of course personally. BUT one thing that I can told you, Palembang is one of the best recommended place to visits, specifically about the original food from that province, a little bit spoiler I ate many kind of special food there and that commonly became landmark of this province is Pempek.
Anyway speaking about the culinary of Palembang which is one of the main food is Pempek or Mpek-Mpek. It is made of fish and sago flours and served together with a dark, rich sauce called Cuko. Cuko is made of brown sugar, chili pepper, garlic, vinegar and salt to boiling water. There are many varieties pempek. The most famous one is Pempek Kapal Selam, which is made from a chicken within pempek dough and then deep-fried. This type pempek contains of high vitamin, protein, mineral, and carbohydrate, is the most nutritious variety. As a local staple pempek can be commonly found on every street in Palembang.

According to some stories, Pempek had been already in Palembang since 16th century when Chinese traveller came to the region. Around 1617 there was an "Apek" ( Chinese slang for an old man) who lived near Musi river. He noticed an abundance of fish caught by the local fisherman. During that period most of the people simply just fried and grilled their fish. The old-man Chinese tried other alternative by adding fish meat with sago flour and other spices, which is he then sold around the village on his bicycle. The people referred to this old man as 'Pek-Apek' which is the food is known today as Empek-Empek or Pempek Palembang.
My conclusion is you had to visit and don't forget to try many authentic food from a whole the world, make an easier step in order to more recognizing or outstanding to the world about 34 provinces in Indonesia, of course become recommend you to invited or attracted the tourist for visits our country.
